Who are we?
in 2014, a group of women from a bible study at Woodland Community Church challenged themselves to serve the community.
That group has grown into an organization of volunteers who are committed to sharing
god's love and mercy with those in need.
Pam M. is one of the founders of The Umbrella Women. She helped create our organization because she was inspired by changes she was experiencing in her own life. She wanted to be sure others facing hardship had the opportunity to know Jesus’ love because her faith in Him is an important source of comfort and joy to her. Pam is a native Floridian who grew up in a little town called Bagdad in the Panhandle. After living in different parts of Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee, she moved to Bradenton in 1992. Pam grew up Methodist and Baptist and has fond memories of her mother taking her and her two brothers to church on her bicycle. She has enjoyed being a hairstylist for over 30 years. Pam feels blessed to share her life with her precious Pekingese, Toby, as well as her two brothers and their mother. She loves riding her bike, playing games, watching movies, and spending time with her beloved friends.
Sheila feels volunteering is in her blood, so she joined us in October of 2019. She knows God puts us in the right place at the right time, so she is always eager to help those in need. Sheila was raised in a Christian family. In 2006, she moved to Florida from the Midwest. Sheila loves her husband, their son, and her work in the healthcare field. She likes to travel with family and friends and loves the outdoors, nature, and the beach. Laughing, coffee, and reading are also high on her list. She never tires of a good laugh or a great book.
Donna has always had a “servant’s heart,” so she joined us in 2014. A native Floridian, she was brought up Southern Baptist and spent her summers in her grandparent’s Church of God congregation in Louisiana. She has been married to her wonderful husband since 1996 and is a loving mother to a daughter and three cats. Donna has been in the optical field since 1982 and currently works as an optician for the V.A. She is a breast cancer survivor who has been in remission since 2016. In her free time, Donna loves to cruise to foreign destinations and cook. She is also a voracious reader who enjoys growing herbs and doing color-by-number art.
Mary became part of our group in 2016 after a spiritual awakening. For many years, she struggled with organized religion until something wonderful clicked when she read God’s Not Dead. The book helped her realize Christianity is all about having a relationship with Jesus, so she joined a church and became baptized. In 1995, Mary moved to Florida from Pennsylvania. She is a retired registered nurse and has been happily married to her husband since 1999. Mary enjoys: camping, fishing, reading, and volunteering. She is an avid quilter and loves spending time behind her sewing machine.
Pam B. joined The Umbrella Women in the winter of 2019 because she was looking for an opportunity to serve others. She grew up in a Christian household, so her faith has always been an important part of her life. Pam strongly believes we are all God’s children and there is good in each of us. After many trips to Sarasota to visit family, she and her husband moved here permanently in 2002. Pam formerly worked in healthcare and as an esthetician. Her interests include running and various sports.
After many years of admiring the mission of The Umbrella Women, Cindy joined us in 2020. She loves being part of the group because it gives her a chance to share God’s message of love and forgiveness. Cindy became a Christian in the late 1970s and renewed her commitment in 2010 by being baptized a second time. She was happily married to her late husband from 1979 to 1992. She is fortunate to have: two sons, two stepsons, 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Cindy battled Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma from 2005 to 2012 and is thankful to be cancer-free. She wants others to know God only asks two things of us: Love thy God with all your heart and soul and love each other the same way.
Gloria is passionate about showing Christ’s love by serving others, so she joined The Umbrella Women in October of 2019. When she was 20, she answered the altar call while attending a Billy Graham Crusade and began her amazing journey as a Christian. Later Gloria was baptized with her daughters in a Baptist church. In 2016, she and her husband moved to Florida to be near family after living in Alaska and Michigan. Gloria has been blessed with five children and five grandchildren. She loves spending time with family and friends. In her spare time, she likes to: garden, golf, exercise, and attend concerts and baseball games.
